Dental Sealants in Chicago, IL
It can be difficult to get children to eat healthy and brush their teeth correctly before bedtime. Eating sugar-laden snacks and drinking soda, plus not brushing well, can lead to tooth decay. Fortunately, dentists have a solution for preventing cavities, dental sealants.
What are Dental Sealants?
Sealants for teeth are a thin layer of a plastic-type material that goes over teeth to protect them from the broken-down sugars and other ingredients in food and drinks. Since sealants are placed over the chewing teeth, which are the premolars and molars, food particles cannot get into the crevices and in-between teeth to decay.
However, before one of our dentists at Ganger Family Dentistry brushes a dental sealant over your child’s teeth, he or she will carefully evaluate them. Before they apply a sealant, the dentist makes sure that there are no signs of decay already present. If there are, then a sealant cannot be applied to the teeth as this will seal in the decay, allowing it to grow unrestrained.
Are Sealants Safe?
While sealants have small traces of BPA, or bisphenol A, in them, they are safe. The amount of BPA in sealants is far less than what is found in the air. Also, dental sealants are 80 percent effective at preventing cavities, so it’s worth the risk for kids to get the protection for their teeth that sealants provide.
How Long do Sealants Last?
After applying a sealant to your child’s teeth, they can last up to 10 years. However, one of our dentists near you in Chicago will inspect the sealant for tears or holes in them. If some damage is present, it is an easy fix because all the dentist needs to do is apply more of the material to cover it.
Using a dental sealant is an easy way to protect your child’s teeth for at least a decade. Our dentists at Ganger Family Dentistry recommend them for kids who have good oral care habits, which are easy to spot due to the condition of their teeth.
